Have you ever heard of a place where kids can produce television programs? Not star in, (although they do that too!), but actually produce the programs? A wonderful program called KIDS-4 is the place where young people can do just that.
The mission of Sun Prairie Cable Access is to provide service to the community of Sun Prairie in the form of original local programming on the KSUN-12 and KIDS-4 channels. KIDS-4 is dedicated to providing continued media literacy education to the Sun Prairie youth through KIDS-4 crews and programming. KSUN-12 is the designated Public, Education and Government (PEG) channel. It encourages community involvement in, and provides information about, city government, local schools, service groups and area churches.
For over twenty years Sun Prairie Cable Access has served thousands of people in the community of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, offering original programming that can be seen nowhere else. A pioneer in the field of media literacy, KIDS-4 continues to distinguish itself as the only access channel in the country devoted entirely to children. KIDS-4 participants examine the media to see how it influences our everyday lives. Through the production of their own shows, KIDS-4 encourages the young people of Sun Prairie to become more critical consumers of electronic media. It also serves as a solid base for those kids interested in a career in the television and entertainment industry.
While in the KIDS-4 program, young people have a safe place to go after school to learn meaningful life skills. They participate in community & school events, learn how to construct sets, write scripts & storyboards, operate video equipment and produce original programming. Underlying these obvious technical skills the kids learn while in the program are important social skills. Through working together on projects they learn how to collaborate and cooperate, understand and respect others opinions and ideas, problem solve, develop their self-esteem and confidence, as well as develop their leadership qualities.
As a non-profit program, KIDS-4 relies heavily on the generosity of contributors and volunteers. It is because of this generosity that Sun Prairie Cable Access was able to make the move to it’s new home in a state-of-the-art facility, and replace outdated equipment with much needed technically advanced new equipment. This has provided the young people in the KIDS-4 program with the experience of producing shows in a -2- professional television studio, including being trained and working on up-to-date video equipment. The number of kids interested in being part of the KIDS-4 program continues to increase. This presents a funding challenge for things such as supplies, projects, and general maintenance of the equipment, which are essential to the program. Therefore we are asking for your assistance in supporting the program. Your donation would help with the purchase of supplies, set materials, costume materials and props.
